Mirboo North is an historic and picturesque country town set amongst the rolling green hills of the Strzelecki Ranges, South Gippsland and is the a place to stay when exploring the region. Located centrally, Mirboo North is the ideal link between Melbourne, East Gippsland, the Bass Coast and Wilsons Promontory National Park. The Grand Ridge Road is said to be one of Victoria’s most spectacular drives, running through forests of giant Mountain Ash. Fantastic fern gullies line the roadside as it winds its way amongst through the Strzelecki Ranges to Tarra Bulga National Park. Care should be taken driving along the Grand Ridge Road, as parts of it are unsealed although there are tasks afoot to seal the remainder. Many of the town’s residents were once visitors just like you. The Strzelecki Ranges in which Mirboo North resides are named after the Polish Count, Paul Edmund de Strzelecki, an energetic and capable man who explored and carried out geological surveys throughout the world. He was know to have trekked across what is now called “La-Trobe Valley” not realizing the vast reserves of brown coal laying beneath his feet. On his journey from Sydney to Melbourne, Strzelecki ventured through Gippsland. His trek through this wild-forested region in 1840 proved to be most difficult and the party arrived at Westernport Bay, exhausted and hungry. |
